#SFGiants come out of nowhere to get Cuban switch-hitting OF Daniel Carbonell

Did you expect the Giants to sign an outfielder from Cuba that was currently residing in Mexico to a deal that put them on their 40-man roster today? Neither did I, and like many people, I was scrambling to figure out who this kid is. About a month ago, Carbonell had five teams listed as ones that were linked to giving him offers. Then, the Yankees and Mariners appeared to be finalists for the switch-hitting Cuban outfielder, Daniel Carbonell. Finally, all of a sudden:

$7 million (at the most) is pocket change for a Major League Baseball team, so to take a small gamble like that is A-OK in my book.

For a guy that’s being touted a little bit for his speed, I’m definitely also interested in his stolen base numbers.

Well, those projections certainly aren’t Yasiel Puig or Jose Abreu, but for a guy that’s being listed as a four- or five-tool player, you’ll probably be expecting some wonderful things from him later on. Here’s a video of him doing baseball drills in either his underwear or his training gear:

Please be really good and bat flip everywhere, Mr. Carbonell. Thanks. It has not been announced yet where Carbonell will start his stateside career within the Giants organization. Update from beat writer Henry Schulman:

Here is Baseball America’s article on the signing, including quotes that put Carbonell as a fourth outfielder if his hitting abilities improve.

The Giants have a day off on Monday, then will begin a two-game series against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.
